Pre Set-Up:
Operator must possess crane operator certification.
- Perform and document thorough pre-trip inspection for truck, crane, and bucket.
- Ensure that fuel tank is full to avoid running out of fuel during bucket operation.
- Wear necessary PPE, including hard hat, while performing pre-trip.
- Create a safe work zone. Use TCP's when required. Keep public at a safe distance. Refer to Traffic Control Manual for Work On Roadways.
- Inspect work area for hazards such as overhead electrical or other objects.
- Ensure that truck is set up for bucket use on firm, level ground.
Task procedure:
Don’t use bucket truck without a ground crew.
- Ground crew must be trained in using the manual controls to lower the bucket in case of radio control failure or other emergency.
- Operator and ground crew must wear appropriate PPE, including hard hat.
- While in the bucket, operator must wear fall arrest harness with lanyard and be attached to the bucket at all times.
- Maintain limits of approach to electrical hazards.
- Keep extremities inside the bucket when it is in motion - risk of crush injuries between bucket and other objects.
- Maintain contact with ground crew - know where they are at all times.
- Operator must stop occasionally to ensure that radio controller stays clean - debris caught beside control levers could cause unwanted movements in boom.
Post-Procedure:
Maintain safe work zone while stowing crane and bucket for transport.
- Ensure that bucket floor is clean before storing.
- Top up fuel.
- Perform post-trip inspection on all equipment.
Emergency Procedures:
- Ground crew must be trained to use manual controls to lower bucket in event of radio control failure.
- If truck loses power while bucket is in use, call Mechanics to repair. If repairs are unsuccessful, call Fire Department for rescue from bucket.
- In the event of operator fall from bucket (in fall arrest), ground crew must use manual controls to lower the bucket. Call 911 immediately for rescue if unable to do so.
- In case of accidental contact with a power line, do not attempt to move bucket. Stay where you are. If you must exit the area, jump clear, feet together and shuffle to avoid step potential. Call 911 and BC Hydro (1-888-769-3766).
