Stihl HS 81 hedge trimmer SWP

Summary: The gas-powered hedge trimmer is used for cutting hedges, shrubs and light branches or vines.

  • User must read and follow manufacturer’s instruction manual.
  • User must be in good physical and mental condition.
  • Ensure that trimmer is properly maintained before and after use.
  • Wear comfortable, but not loose-fitting clothing.
  • Use required PPE.
  • No smoking when maintaining or operating trimmer.

Hazards:

· White-finger (vibration)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Required:

· Safety eye protection

· Hearing protection

· Gloves

· Safety footwear with adequate tread

· High visibility apparel

Pre-use procedure:

  • Check that the trimmer is properly assembled and in good condition – refer to the operator’s manual.
  • Check fuel system for leaks – especially visible parts such as tank cap and hose connections – do not start if there are leaks or damage.
  • Check function of throttle trigger and lockout – keep stop switch in Stop or     O position.
  • Ensure that spark plug boot is secure to avoid possible electrical/fire hazard.
  • Check that cutting blades are securely mounted and in good condition.
  • Make sure handles are dry and clean – especially free of oil.
  • Transport trimmer with scabbard/blade guard in place.
  • Inspect work area for obstacles and hazards – be especially aware of electrical lines and maintain appropriate limit of approach.

Task procedure:

  • Do not drop start the trimmer – start as described in the instruction manual.
  • Check idle speed setting – cutter blades must not move when the engine is idling and the throttle trigger released.
  • Always hold the trimmer with both hands on the handles.
  • The rear handle can be adjusted for different cutting situations.  Do not operate the throttle while the handle lock is released.
  • Watch the cutting blades – do not cut areas that you cannot see.
  • Be aware of the “flywheel effect” – cutting blades will continue to run for a short time after the throttle trigger is released.
  • Make sure you maintain good balance and secure footing.
  • Avoid over-reaching.
  • Never touch the cutting blades while the motor is running – shut off engine and wait until cutting blades have come to a complete standstill.

Post-procedure:

  • Trimmer should be cleaned and inspected for defects and adjustments as per instruction manual before storing.
  • Transport with scabbard/blade guard in place.
  • Bring the trimmer to the Mechanics if there are unresolved safety or mechanical issues.  Trimmer should be tagged as unusable until it is repaired.
