Pre-trip as per Shu-Pak operator’s manuals and BC Motor Vehicle Act – document your inspection.

Check Equipment

Wheels should be chocked during pre-trip

Ensure that people stand clear of crusher and packer panels during operation.

Ensure area behind truck is clear of objects and people before opening tailgate.

Ensure area around grabber arm is clear of objects and people before using

If raising the packer body during equipment check, unit must be parked on level ground

Always use safety prop if working under raised packer body.

Ensure tailgate lock pins are securely in place before collecting garbage

Use proper safe fuelling technique

Do this to protect yourself when performing the work:

Vehicle Operation

Maintain three-point contact when entering/exiting cab.

Operate truck from right hand stand-up side only during collection of solid waste.

Ensure that mirrors are adjusted properly

Do not exceed 20 km/h when driving from right hand stand up side

Watch for overhead lines – minimum overhead clearance of 3.89 m required

Maintain limits of approach and follow overhead line SWP.

Keep step clean and free of oil/grease

Work at a steady, even pace

Follow route maps

Watch for materials that might explode – e.g. fluorescent light tubes, aerosol cans, propane cylinders, etc.

Use a spotter if available when backing up

If no spotter, follow best practices - vehicle walk-around, sounding horn, backing onto view-side

Do not climb into hopper or packer - unit must be locked out/tagged per operator’s manual

Eye protection is mandatory

Manual collection is heavy, repetitive work. Make sure you:

Manual Task Process

Do not step away from truck until it comes to a complete stop.

Ensure that work brake is fully engaged before leaving cab

Wear closed-cuffed gloves only to minimize risk of snagging work brake switch and disengaging it.

Set parking brake if truck is on a hill or more than 10 feet from materials to be manually collected.

Step carefully when leaving right hand stand-up side of truck – do not jump or leap from the vehicle.

Avoid slips, trips and falls – watch for uneven or slippery surfaces.

Ensure that grabber arm is fully retracted before collecting manually

Use proper lift technique. Avoid over-reaching, twisting, etc.

Adhere to 12 kg weight restriction for manual solid waste collection

Are biohazard aware - follow safe garbage handling SWP and keep solid waste away from your body.

Automated Task

Maximum lift capacity is 204 kg (arm fully extended).

User must ensure that nobody is near the vehicle before activating controls.

User must be in full and clear view of the lifting arm at all times

Never disable or bypass safety equipment or other protective devices

Read and follow operator’s manuals
