CYPW Radio Calls SOP

CYPW Radio Calls SOP

Radio

· Frequency for CYWP is 123.00 (radio should be locked on it)

· Test the radio upon arrival by keying the mic 7 times to turn on the runway lights.  2 keys after that adjust the brightness.

· Bring a hand-held radio outside the truck with you when leaving your vehicle on the maneuvering area.

You need to cover the following point in your call:

1.       Who are you talking to “Powell River Traffic

2.       Who you are “Airport Maintenance Vehicle ###”

3.       Where you are and what you are planning to do “Working on the runway for runway maintenance”

Note: youneed to make position report at least every 5 mins.

Call Procedure Examples:

When entering the runway from Bravo (crossing the hold short line) and turning right: (make this call after checking for traffic and before entering the runway)

“Powell River Traffic, Airport Maintenance Vehicle ####, Backtracking 09 from Bravo

When driving on the runway checking for debris or driving to your work area

Powell River, Airport Maintenance Vehicle ###, Working on the runway for the next 10 minutes”

When done working on the runway back over and crossing the hold short line

Powell River Traffic, Airport maintenance Vehicle ###, Clear on Bravo”

When you hear an aircraft making a radio call of any kind, repeat your general call: “Powell River Traffic, Airport Maintenance Vehicle ###, Working on the runway”

Generally, they will ask your time remaining on the runway by something like:

“Airport Maintenance Vehicle ###, this is Cessna 172 Foxtrot, India, Victor, Golf.  We are downwind of 09, I can extend my downwind if you re going to be done soon”

Your reply could be:

“India, Victor, Golf, this is Airport Maintenance Vehicle ###, We are just at the midpoint in the runway right now, going west and will be finished in approximately 5 minutes.  I’ll advise when clear”

Their reply would probably be less formal now and be something like:

“Airport Maintenance Vehicle, we will orbit Harwood island and await your call”

Clear immediately for a scheduled flight such as Air Ambulance and PASCO arriving.

Make your call position call first, then transit to a point at least 45m from the runway area or to closest taxi way.  Communicate your intentions (even in plain language).

It is critical you let the pilot know you hear the aircraft calls and know their intentions.

Once the traffic has called that they have cleared the hold short line (“down and clear”), enter again and continue your work.

*Please revert to plain conversation language on the radio if you get mixed up on phraseology
